I know there was a topic on it before, but I've been thinking about something. No drinking, drugs, or promiscuity. Individuality thing; you're keeping your own identity, regardless of what others might want or expect you to do. I know this part. What I want to know now, is whether it is a strict set of rules, or not.

If it is, then it goes against thinking individually, in the sense that you are living an aspect of your own life by standards not set by yourself (that being sXe). Agreed? What if sometime you REALLY want some alcohol? Not because somebody else told you to, but for the drink itself. It looks ridiculously refreshing. That puts in you in a dilemma, right?

If it isn't a strict set of rules, then it might as well not even exist, right? Drink, smoke, and fuck all you want, as long as it's your own decision and standards. It would just be paradoxal, labelling yourself when you're trying say you're a free thinking individual. It seems like it would basically just be a way to sell shirts, while only kids who already believe in those values continue following them.

I probably just don't understand it clearly enough, but here's another question. There are thousands of facets where people will place expectations on your life. Schools, jobs, relationships, language, clothing, style, music, etc. Does being edge affect those areas as well? If not, then it's only on sex, drugs, and alcohol. Why only those three? Is it a health thing? Then why not include diet and exercise? Is it to not hurt other people around you? Then why not include not being a total dickweed? If it isn't just about those three, then it brings back up the individuality and rules thing, since that seems to be the only other option.

Not trying to insult anybody, I'm just curious as to the decision making process. I essentially follow the three basics anyway, with the exception of cooking with alcohol on occassion. Just wondering if that automatically makes me straight edge or not, even though I've never considered myself.

I've really only followed the basics. I mean, if I'm dying of thirst and the only beverage available is alchoholic, I'm going to drink it so I can live another day. I've never acutally been that strict on it. I just say no when people ask me to smoke or drink.

Your right on the money sir. As soon as people become labelled in such a 'style' then the essence of its individuality. I'm happy for people who don't want to drink smoke or fuck if ti makes them happy and keeps them healthy, but fuck, doing it for other reasons completely defeats its original purpose of an individual mindset for a lifestyle.

You know what bothers me? Kids who are like 14, 15, 16, etc. saying they are straight-edge. You just haven't tried it yet. Come back to me when you're legal drinking age and tell me you're straight-edge and maybe I'll believe you. Just sayin'.

I just dont want to. I came to that conclussion before I ever heard of the label. The few times i did anything I disliked it and knew I wouldnt be doing it again much anymore so 6 years later ive yet to be tempted. Some little kids use it as a trend but im pretty serious about it to the point where I refuse to date someone that isnt.

I just follow the no drugs, no alcohol and no smoking as well as no promiscues sex besides that time in Pittsburgh.

Also I have a high metabolism and a strong immun e system so my body automaticallyt adapts to any intake after one time. I was given one of the strongest pain killers available after my bad back and it worked then the next day and teh day after that and the day after that it didnt do shit. ALSO I just hate the general environment surrounding druggies, potheads etc. They tend to be less trustworthy, reliable, and just ghetto garbage. I dont want myself or my girlfriend around that kind of horseshit.

For the most part I'm a goody tooshoes but it pays off, I can actually afford an HDTV over a bag of pot that will expell in 2 days and not ahve to worry about having my TV stolen. Plus Im very against the worldwide drug trade crime and violence. I know most of you are teenagers and dont give a shit about anything not taking up time in your little world but yeah, I do.

Its just like being part of a group like being a certain fan of a sports team or being a BYW. People may not understand why you are apart of that group, but if it means something to you then more power to ya.

its one thing to stand for your principles its another to use this 'group' to hate on other people outside of it. thats no better then being a Nazi.

I don't know anyone personally that is straight edge. It was a pretty big fad in my area a couple years ago, but all those kids broke edge fairly quickly after I knew them, within 6 months. If you wanna be straight edge, go for it, doesn't matter to me, I'm definitely with Marshall on this one, don't say you're straight edge until you're old enough to actually drink and then I'll believe you....until then, as I believe Scott Henson once stated, "You aren't straight edge, you're simply just a law abiding citizen"
