PostSubject: JustinMarshall's Band of the Week (Updated 11/29)   Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:42 pm

Fuck it, I'm bored. I did this on Spotmonkey for awhile then it got stickied and immediately died haha. I'll give it another shot here. If there's on thing I feel like I know, it's music and up and coming bands, so once a week (possibly more depending on how busy or not busy I am) I'll post a spotlight on a cool band you've probably never heard of. It could be from any genre since I listen to everything but country (if you listen to country music you won't enjoy my thread). Hopefully people enjoy it and it gets good feedback and people find at least one new band they like out of this whole thing. Also, everyone else feel free to post their own band of the week with a few videos and some background info. Just don't come in, name a band, and give no media or anything cuz at that point just don't even bother.

Oh, and if you hate the band one week, don't be discouraged from checking back next week because I guarantee whoever it is will probably sound 100% different haha.

I'll start with an interesting techno-punk/indie band (they're really hard to classify tbh) from the UK called The Klaxons. They're definitely unique and their second album, Surfing the Void, just dropped 2 days ago so I figured they'd be a good band to start with. Although they're pretty popular in the UK, having won the Mercury Prize in 2007 for best album in all of the UK or Ireland, they're pretty much unknown here in the US. Here are a few songs, which are interesting to me just because of how different they all are from one another:

"Atlantis to Interzone"

"Gravity's Rainbow (Live)"

"Echoes"

"Golden Skans"

No, but really...this band rules and I'm glad you showed me them. They are really hard to classify, but I can see why they are popular in the UK. Catchy as FUCK.

Good to see I got at least some responses Smile I'm gonna do a second band this week since they relate to The Klaxons in some way and are kind of similar in a few ways. That band is The Futureheads. They're another UK band and they have a bit of a different sound than The Klaxons do. They're a post-punk band and I would compare them to maybe a band like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, or Hot Hot Heat with a bit of Devo, XTC and other New Wave. They're another band that is very big in the UK and Europe, but not so much in the US. Let me know what you think people and feel free to throw out requests of styles of music or anything. I'm always happy to talk music.

Also, my goal is to try to do update this with a new band every Tuesday and Friday, but no matter what it'll be done once a week.

"Heartbeat Song"

"Decent Days and Nights"

I always like throwing in a good live clip and I feel this one is perfect to show how much the band can really rock, even though it's a bit long.

Seriously man, go for it. That's actually where I'm lacking in my knowledge. I do love heavier stuff and metal, but I only know more mainstream shit for the most part. I'll def read it and I'll try to open you up to some of the better indie bands haha.

I would totally be down for this and it would probably make me want to visit the site more often. I've been on such a hardcore and metal kick lately that I can't stop listening to it and downloading as much as I can. BTW the Futureheads rule, and I like them loads more than the klaxons. I've liked every futurehead song I've heard. Winter gloves should be next.

So here's a bit of a change of pace in that I'm posting a heavier band for my first band this week. If you're a metal fan you'll probably know them but I feel like not enough people know who they are so I'm gonna give them some attention in here. That band is The Human Abstract, a prog. metal band. The thing that really stands out to me personally about them is their amazing guitar work. But I won't talk too much about them, I'll just say that they fucking rule and you should check them out.

"Vela, Together We Await the Storm"

"Crossing the Rubicon"

"Harbinger"

"Counting Down the Days"

We discussed this when you mentioned them before. These dudes know what their doing. They are getting bigger and are one of the hardest working metal bands out there right now IMO. They are one of the few metal bands out there that almost make three guitarists work. <3 this band,

Only the third vid worked for me on here, but I heard was pretty cool. I like hardcore bands where I can understand their singer. I generally dislike stuff like White Chapel because there's no complexity in the music itself (like these guys here) and it's just mindless screaming.

You just can't watch them on here because embedding is disabled. Click "Watch on Youtube" after you hit the play button and it'll play on YouTube.
