PostSubject: Taking/Giving Kicks to the Head   Sun Apr 18, 2010 2:30 am

This might sound like a stupid question, but in ABW, we've never really worked on taking or giving kicks to the head. Arlen Keyte, who likes to use a big boot for a signature, only hits the chest because he's afraid of hitting his opponent's nose or something. I don't really know how to reassure him because I'm not sure myself. So what would help is if someone could give a basic way of taking/giving each of the following common kicks:

- Superkicks

- Boots

- Kicks with the shin (enziguiries and such)

I use a step-up enziguiri and no one's had any issue taking it, so we might be fine there, but feel free to give tips on it. I'm sure there's something I could be doing better.

On superkicks and boots probably one of the best ways to start getting use to it is when your receiving the kick turn your head slightly and take it more to the cheek. Also if your not comfortable with taking it since you said you guys really havent done it often, right before the foot connects put a hand up like your blocking a chair shot. Eventually after doing superkicks and boots enough, the person doing them should start getting use to the placement and you wont have to block. He should make contact with the face, but not like break your jaw you know? Also always do the leg slap on super kicks, because if the impact isn't great the slap will make it sound more devastating.

Enziguris I usually hit in the shoulder and then graze my foot up after the impact.

Big boots/Yakuza kicks...basically it's the responisbility of whoever is taking it. I always just kick whatever the person gives me. The safest way is to tuck your chin and get kicked in the top of the head, but some crazy people like to take it in the mush.

With enzuigiris, I think the best place to land the kick is the neck/trapezius (with more emphasis on the traps than the neck... kicking the neck directly is also very dangerous and can knock somebody out.) area. That way you provide the illusion of hitting the medulla oblongata (the "enzui" in enzuigiri Razz) while hitting a fairly meaty part that will provide a good sound and is fairly safe. When you're kicking, the point of impact should be your instep area (the top of your foot and the crook where your ankle is.) This part of your foot is the most flexibile, which will help the absorption of the impact for your opponent. It will likely also be padded the most, as your kickpads (if you wear them) will have a bit more padding due to them being crunched up a bit. You should never try to kick somebody in the head with your shins; the shins are incredibly hard and can cause a lot more harm than good. Plus the kicks don't look as good. The argument of having a greater surface area only would apply if the target has a large surface area to match, like across the chest.

For eating big boots, either taking it on the forehead or turning your face so that the sole of the foot hits flush across your cheek would work. If you're particularly worried, use your opposing hand (so if you're turning so that it hits your left cheek, using your right hand so that your palm gets hit) to absorb the impact. The problem with this method is that your timing has to be really really good or else it'll be obvious that you're protecting yourself. Ideally you would time it so that it looks like the beginning of your motion to break your fall. The same would apply for superkicks. For taking these, I'm a terrible example though, since I always do my best to lean into them face first.

I've taken liek 3094934 big boots. the guy should get his foot up to yoru face, n it's the job of the person taking it to not get kicked straight in the nose, if you do, your fault. I just turn my face n let it go, so he hits your cheeck.
